Pacific Asian Counseling Services Joins the National #GivingTuesday Movement to Encourage Spending with a Purpose
LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 21, 2014 – Giving this holiday season has just gotten a lot easier.
Taking place on December 2, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving when people around the world celebrate the generosity that the holiday spirit inspires.
Pacific Asian Counseling Services (PACS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to healing people with mental illness though counseling and caring, joins the #GivingTuesday movement this year for the first time.
“How great to be part of a global movement of giving,” said Mariko Kahn, executive director of PACS. “This holiday season everyone can make a positive change in the way Asian American communities perceive mental health.”
Among all ethnicities, Asian American and Pacific Islanders tend to be the least likely to seek mental health services because of stigma, shame, and language barriers. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the fifth leading cause of death among Asian Americans.
PACS encourages the community – our family, friends and employers – to take a stand against the stigma of mental illness by promoting mental health awareness.
The funds raised on #GivingTuesday by PACS will be used to update its outreach materials into needed Asian languages from brochures to YouTube videos, continue its Health and Fitness summer program for Asian youth, and increase access to healing practices such as mindful meditation.
